Filming vertical content earlier today for congressional candidate Mike Croley as he is interviewed for podcast Better Together with Kosta Yepifantsev.

Verticals can be fun. It’s not my fave format to save for when I need to deliver to multiple destinations, but if it’s 99.99% certain to be only seen in 9:16, I can kind of relax and just go with it.

For this project it was easier to save for 2.40:1 for a few reasons: I like the horizontal wide for cinema (just in case), I can grap a nice 16:9 from that, and the horizontal guides help me with action safe in 9:16.

Komodo-X 17:9 open gate with 9:16 and 2.40:1 frame guides.

I figured 6K would be overkill and since I’m 99% sure it’ll never be seen in anything better than FHD, I shot this in 4K ProRes. I can get lovely 2K horizontal and vertical exports from that.

The 9:16 result.

Podcast produced by Morgan Franklin. Big shoutout to Mike’s campaign manager Hillary Huddleston for her endless support. Video shot on RED Komodo-X on a Sachtler aktiv8T flowtech 75 system, lit with a Nanlite PavoSlim 240c and Forza 60c “Joker”, and supported by Matthews mini reverse stands. Video sound recorded with a Sennheiser e614 supercardioid straight into camera.
